Combating Digital Exclusion in Southwark!

Community TechAid is proud to partner with Veolia and the London Borough of Southwark to launch a vital initiative aimed at reducing digital exclusion in the community.

We are calling on Southwark residents to donate their unused laptops, smartphones, and tablets at newly established drop-off points located in all 12 Southwark libraries and the Reuse and Recycling Centre. These donations will help us provide much-needed technology to those who are currently disconnected from the digital world, enabling them to access essential services, education, and opportunities. By repurposing donated devices, we are helping to prevent potential e-waste from ending up in landfill and reducing the demand for new devices. This, in turn, cuts down on the production of new electronics, leading to a decrease in CO2 emissions, whilst encouraging reuse and repair.

At Community TechAid, we understand the profound impact that access to technology can have on individuals and families. In today’s society, being digitally connected is not just a convenience—it’s a necessity. Yet, many people in Southwark still face barriers to accessing the devices and the internet they need to participate fully in modern life. This initiative allows us to change that by redistributing donated devices to those in need and offering training to help them use their new technology confidently.

Every device donated makes a difference. Whether it’s a smartphone that allows someone to stay in touch with loved ones, a laptop that opens the door to online learning, or a tablet that connects someone to critical healthcare information, your contributions help empower those who are digitally excluded.

This initiative has been made possible through support from Material Focus and the Nationwide Electricals Recycling Fund. The grant supports our mission to extend the life cycle of electronic devices, reduce the environmental impact of e-waste, and make it easier for people to recycle their unwanted electronics.

In Southwark alone, it’s estimated that there are about 4 million unused electrical items hidden away in drawers. Alarmingly, 39% of people choose to bin these items rather than recycle or donate them. By providing convenient drop-off locations, we’re making it easier than ever for residents to donate their old tech, ensuring it gets a second life and helps those who need it most.

We accept a wide range of devices, including laptops, smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and accessories such as keyboards, mice, webcams, and headphones.

Our CEO, Cat Smith, emphasises the importance of this community effort:

“At Community TechAid, our mission is to ensure that no one in our community is left behind in the digital age. By donating your unused devices, you’re not only reducing waste but also giving someone the tools they need to thrive in our increasingly digital world. We’re grateful to our partners and to everyone in Southwark who supports this initiative. Together, we can bridge the digital divide and build a more inclusive society.”

We believe that by coming together as a community, we can tackle both digital exclusion and e-waste, creating a more sustainable and connected future for all. If you have an unused device gathering dust, please consider donating it to our cause!
